SALLY AND ART HAILAND NATURE PRESERVE CREATED

One woman’s love of nature and her family has made possible the permanent protection of a high priority parcel within the Conservancy’s Harbor Springs Greenbelt. The new 40-acre Sally and Art Hailand Nature Preserve adjoins existing nature preserves and private land creating a block of nearly 400 acres of protected land, all found just a few miles from both Harbor Springs and Petoskey. Located a stone’s throw from Crooked Lake, the new preserve is part of a wetland complex of high quality habitat for many species as noted by wildlife biologist Dr. Bill Scharf in an ecological inventory of the land. A large variety of bird species ranging from the beautiful Wood Duck to the state threatened Red-shouldered Hawk are found in the region and the land’s protection is important for the water quality of Crooked Lake.

The unique bed and breakfast built by Jon and Sally Fogg was just the kind of place that Terry was seeking – and it happened to be available. Upon their first visit, Terry and his wife Beverly fell in love with the inn and its surrounding island property.
