Kindergarten and first grade Programs
All school programs are offered at no cost. These free programs are designed to support Michigan school standards.
Students will embark on a nature hike to sharpen their senses, observing the natural world and use their five senses to gather information. Their natural curiosity will be guided to enhance their awareness of everything around them.
Michigan Science Standards:
Kindergarten
- K-S.IR.00.01: Make purposeful observation of the natural world using the five senses.
This hands-on lesson invites children to explore the wonders of leaves, including why they change colors, how they help trees grow, and what makes each leaf unique. Through a guided hike, scavenger hunts, and creative activities, students will discover the magic of autumn while building a deeper appreciation for the natural world.
Next Generation Science Standards:
Kindergarten
- K-LS1-1: Use observations to describe patterns of what plants and animals (including humans) need to survive.
1st grade
- 1-LS1-1: Use materials to design a solution to a human problem by mimicking how plants and/or animals use their external parts to help them survive, grow, and meet their needs.
Students explore the world of insects, bugs, spiders, millipedes, centipedes, and crustaceans by collecting and examining various invertebrates during this active hike. Using tools like sweep nets and bug jars, students will collect and share discoveries and discuss adaptations and body functions of many-legged critters.
Next Generation Science Standards:
Kindergarten
K-LS1-1: Use observations to describe patterns of what plants and animals (including humans) need to survive.
1st grade
LS1.A: Structure and Function: All organisms have external parts. Different animals use their body parts in different ways to see, hear, grasp objects, protect themselves, move from place to place, and seek, find, and take in food, water and air. Plants also have different parts (roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits) that help them survive and grow.
winter Program
These three programs can be offered all three seasons of the school year.
Winter is a wonderful time of year to get outside and have some fun! As we adapt to the colder months, so do animals. During this program students will learn about what different animals do during this season to survive northern Michigan’s winters. This program encourages younger students to experience winter using their senses!
