Life Under the Snow: A Dive into the Subnivian
Date
- Mar 10 2026
Time
- 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Location
In partnership with Emmet County Parks and Recreation at The Headlands Dark Sky Park
Join LTC Director of Environmental Education Dylan for a presentation exploring the secret lives unfolding beneath the snow. We’ll uncover the subnivean world, the narrow space between snow and soil where small mammals, insects, and plants survive the long northern Michigan winter, and where predators rely on this hidden layer for hunting and shelter. Together, we’ll look more closely at how snow acts as insulation, why this fragile winter habitat matters, and what happens when winter conditions change. This all-ages program is designed for anyone curious about the natural world around us, even when it’s out of sight. Registration is not necessary.
