Farmland Conservation Initiative

PRESERVE VALUABLE NORTHERN MICHIGAN FARMLAND

SOWING THE SEEDS OF THE FUTURE

Northern Michigan boasts a long and rich agricultural legacy. From established family farms to the passionate new generation of farmers, one thing is clear: the land is their most treasured asset. Dedicated farmers are not only working the land for today but are fiercely committed to ensuring it thrives for generations to come.

That’s where the Farmland Conservation Initiative comes in. This innovative program is transforming the future of farming by protecting precious farmland through conservation easements, all while empowering farmers to continue their vital work. By selling a conservation easement, farmers can unlock the financial potential of their land without losing ownership or the ability to farm it.  But beyond the financial rewards, there’s an even deeper benefit: the pride and peace of mind that comes from knowing the land will remain forever protected in its natural state.

WHAT IS A CONSERVATION EASEMENT?

A conservation easement is a voluntary agreement that allows a landowner to limit the type or amount of development on their property while retaining private ownership of the land. The easement is signed by the landowner and the Conservancy who accepts the easement with the understanding that it must enforce the terms of the easement in perpetuity. After the easement is signed, it is recorded with the County Register of Deeds and applies to all future owners of the land.
